‘1 in 5 Salisbury drivers breaking lights law’

Up to one in five motorists in Salisbury is currently breaking the law and risking their safety with faulty lights, an early
morning traffic survey revealed.

Nearly 20 % of cars on three main roads into the city had at least one non-working or dim headlight, sidelight or stop lamp.

Car service adviser Sam Holman of the Bodytech autoservice centre at Netherhampton admitted: “We were astonished at
just how many cars had lights out.”

Bodytech proprietor Andy Downes said: “We carried out the survey on the first seriously dark morning of the autumn and that’s when the extent of the problem came to light.

“Most people aren’t deliberately taking risks. It’s obvious that drivers are often simply unaware of the problem. Fortunately, there is a simple DIY check drivers can carry out without even getting out of their car.

“Simply take a look at your car’s reflection; rear lights, including the brake lights, can be checked in the rear view mirror.”

Bodytech autoservice centre has produced a free 5-minute self-test and safety guide that is available here.

The company is also running an autumn campaign to supply replacement bulbs and wiper blades for all cars and fit them free for most models of car.
